Some of my favourite rock climbing areas

Mostly chosen because of great personal memories. You can tell from these that I like climbing on granite slabs!
See also Galloway Climbing pages for some more areas where I really enjoy climbing in the area where I live.

Bouldering at the Buttermilks in California with Wills, Lisa and Airlie.

Bouldering at the Buttermilks in California with Wills Young, Lisa Rands and Airlie Anderson. I taught them everything they know.....if only.

Linda on pitch 3 of Reinaldo Behnken, Urca, Rio de Janeiro Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A great venue for a climbing holiday. A stunning city and loads of great rock climbing right by the road (and right by the beach!). The picture shows Linda on pitch 3 of Reinaldo Behnken, Urca
The crags at Arapiles in Australia Arapiles in Australia is a place I visited for the first time in summer 2004 - it was great, beautiful rock, balmy mid-winter weather, barbecues, Shiraz, gum trees, kangaroos and parrots.

Colin Hossack leading the fourth pitch of the normal route on Naranjo de Bulnes. Picos de Europa, Spain. More great rock climbing in the mountains and surrounding valleys. The picture shows Colin Hossack leading the fourth pitch of the normal route on Naranjo de Bulnes.
Blaven to Clach Glas traverse, scrambling on Skye

The Black Cuillin on the Isle of Skye in Scotland is another famous place to climb, if it doesn't rain and the midges stay away. The rock is great and the full Cuillin Ridge Traverse in good weather is easily the best one day (or two day?) mountaineering trip in Scotland. The picture was taken on the classic Clach Glas to Blaven traverse.

James Kinnaird leading the final delicate moves of Sprauchlers Groove James Kinnaird leading the final delicate moves of Sprauchlers Groove on the Dungeon Hill, Galloway. My local mountain crag, I have been involved in many first ascents her, including this route.
rock climbing at Suesca, Colombia

Suesca, Colombia. A laid back place with some good rock-climbing, just a couple of hours north of the capital, Bogota. Not at all the image people have of rural Colombia....

Some of my favourite mountains

Some of my favourite peaks, for one reason or another.

Aresonraju, 5999m, Cordillera Blanca , Peru Artesonraju 5999m, Cordillera Blanca, Peru. It's stunningly beautiful and it's 5999m high, so it had to be in the list.
Barre des Ecrins, Dauphine, France.

Barre des Ecrins, Dauphine, France. One of the best birthdays I ever had was traversing this peak.

Pedra do Bau, Brazil. Though only about 2000m high this has to be one of the world's most spectacular mountains Pedra do Bau, Brazil. Though only about 2000m high this has to be one of the world's most spectacular mountains. It's a wedge of granite 2km long, 300-500m high and only about 10m wide along the top!
Matterhorn/Cervino, European Alps, Switzerland-Italy. Over-rated, over subscribed and photographed far too often, but its still an awesome mountain. This picture was taken from the Monte Rosa hut at dawn, April 2004.
Muztag Ata, 7546m, Xinjiang, China. Muztag Ata, 7546m,  Xinjiang, China. The biggest thing I have ever skiied, although not quite the steepest. Also to date the highest peak I have climbed, and altogether a great holiday with some great memories.
The Old Man of Hoy, Orkney islands Does it count as a mountain? It's certainly one of the most impressive summits I have ever stood on! The Old Man of Hoy in Orkney, a 135m high pile of chossy and greasy sandstone. A thoroughly unpleasant climb leading to an absolutely amazing summit.
Ben Nevis at sunset, 10pm, June 2006. Scotland's highest and mightiest peak. Ben Nevis at sunset, 10pm, June 2006. Scotland's highest and mightiest peak.
Skiing at 4600m on Volcan Domuyo in Argentina. High camp lies 1800m below but just one hour away...  In one way this trip was nothing spectacular, but in other ways it was one of the best ski-mountaineering trips I have done. An ordinary trip that became brilliant....
