My ten favourite climbing areas around the world.

This page features photos of some of my favourite rock climbing venues.

On another page I have photos of some of my Favourite mountains from around the world.

My (current) ten favourite rock climbing areas

Mostly chosen because of great personal memories. You can tell from these that I like climbing on granite slabs!
See also Galloway Climbing pages for some more areas where I really enjoy climbing near where I live.

Rannoch Wall, Buachaille Etive Mor, Glencoe, Scotland. Rannoch Wall, Buachaille Etive Mor, Glencoe, Scotland. One of the most sensational places to climb in Scotland, with good rock too.
Bouldering at the Buttermilks in California with Wills, Lisa and Airlie.

Bouldering at the Buttermilks in California with Wills Young, Lisa Rands and Airlie Anderson. I taught them everything they know.....if only.

Linda on pitch 3 of Reinaldo Behnken, Urca, Rio de Janeiro Rio de Janeiro,Brazil. A great venue for a climbing holiday. A stunning city and loads of great rock climbing right by the road (and right by the beach!). The picture shows Linda on pitch 3 of Reinaldo Behnken, Urca.
The crags at Arapiles in Australia Arapiles in Australia is a place I visited for the first time in summer 2004 - it was great, beautiful rock, balmy mid-winter weather, barbecues, Shiraz, gum trees, kangaroos and parrots.
tive Slabs, Glen Etive, Scotland. Ian brown on the 5a crux move of Spartan Slab. Etive Slabs, Glen Etive, Scotland. Ian Brown on the 5a crux move of Spartan Slab.
Colin Hossack leading the fourth pitch of the normal route on Naranjo de Bulnes. Picos de Europa, Spain. There is more great rock climbing in the mountains and surrounding valleys of northern Spain. The picture shows Linda Biggar leading what was about the tenth pitch on the Rampa de Canalizos route on the south face of the Peņa Santa.
Blaven to Clach Glas traverse, scrambling on Skye

The Black Cuillin on the Isle of Skye in Scotland is another famous place to climb, if it doesn't rain and the midges stay away. The rock is great and the full Cuillin Ridge Traverse in good weather is easily the best one day (or two day?) mountaineering trip in Scotland. The picture was taken on the classic Clach Glas to Blaven traverse.

James Kinnaird leading the final delicate moves of Sprauchlers Groove James Kinnaird leading the final delicate moves of Sprauchlers Groove on the Dungeon Hill, Galloway. My local mountain crag, I have been involved in many first ascents her, including this route.
Peņa Cabrera, otherwise known as Naranjito, a nice quiet  little crag near Granada in southern Spain.
rock climbing at Suesca, Colombia

Suesca, Colombia. A laid back place with some good rock-climbing, just a couple of hours north of the capital, Bogota. Not at all the image people have of rural Colombia.
